Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement is responsible for the creation of a nationwide program that protects society and the environment from the adverse effects of coal mining operations, while ensuring an adequate supply of coal to meet the Nation's energy needs. Major objectives of the Office include establishment of minimum national standards for regulating the surface effects of coal mining, assistance to the States in developing and implementing regulatory programs, and promotion of the reclamation of previously mined areas.
